Bruce the Shark

This 9 inch double-tiered marble cake with chocolate filling, is Bruce the Shark from "Finding Nemo".  My Sister-in-law wanted a realistic looking shark for my nephew's 2nd birthday.  She found a character cake, and asked if I could reproduce something like it.  She also requested buttercream instead of fondant.  I have to admit that this was a bigger challenge than I expected!  The reason I started making cakes with fondant was that I liked the 3D effect you can get with the product.  With buttercream covered cakes, the images are very 2D, at least to me.  I finally figured out how to make the shark have more character by shading the colors, and highlighting.  I know that sounds really anal, but I am my biggest critic!  After all the time I spent fretting about how he looked, I think it turned out pretty well.

  1. WOW! That's so impressive! I want to make a cake around the Finding Nemo shark for my son's 3rd birthday this weekend. I know it won't look this good, but I am willing to try! :)

    1. Hi Amanda, sorry for the late reply! The fins and the tail were lower than the center cake, so that gave it some dimension, and for the shading I used Duff edible cake spray in silver. Once I was done spraying, I went over the light areas with buttercream icing to create the highlight. The eyes and mouth were done with fondant. I hope that helps! Thanks

    1. Hi Jamie. I just answered the question about the shading to the lady before you if you want details on that. Otherwise, the cake was just two layers in the middle and smaller pieces cut out for the fins and the tail. I used buttercream icing for the majority and fondant for they eyes & mouth. Please let me know if you have any further questions! Thanks for looking :)
